The Rescue of the 1879 Flummerfelt Barn

Saving a Piece of Oakland Township History

In 2004, the Oakland Township Historical Society, Oakland Township Historic District Commission, Oakland Township Parks and Recreation Commission, and numerous community volunteers worked together to save the historic 1879 Flummerfelt Barn.

The project became a grassroots preservation effort, bringing together residents, local organizations, government agencies, volunteers, and sponsors to protect an important reminder of Oakland Township's agricultural past.

The barn's rescue showed what could be accomplished when a community combined dedication, leadership, and cooperation to preserve its history.

Preservation in Action As Oakland Township continued to grow and change, the Flummerfelt Barn project demonstrated how historic buildings and community landmarks could be preserved rather than lost. The effort remains an important example of grassroots historic preservation in the township.

The Documentary

Barn on the Move documents the community effort to rescue the Flummerfelt Barn. The Oakland Township Historical Society produced the documentary both to record the project and to encourage other communities to find creative ways to preserve historic structures and other local resources.

The documentary preserves the story of the people, organizations, and volunteers who came together to make the project possible.
